Throughout Letra’s life, her calling has taught her many lessons about herself, others and God. Through singing and stage performance, Letra shares her love and joy with all who will listen or watch. Her style has been compared to some of the greatest secular and gospel artists, but she prefers to be heard for her own unique style which blends gospel, jazz, inspirational, classical and R & P (rhythm and praise).
A Colorado Springs, Colorado native, Letra Jones-Davis was a born fireball. The youngest of four children, she learned quickly that noise in any form, whether by clapping, stomping, shouting or singing would be her primary way of expressing herself and making sure she was heard. Under her mother’s (the late Pastor Theta A. Thornton) strict and watchful eye, Letra realized that music brought her joy while creating an atmosphere of joy for others around her. She quickly signed up for every school/church concert or play – and, wherever else she was allowed to share her gifts.
Opportunity Knocks
Throughout her young life, Letra continued to pursue these opportunities. Shortly after she was given the honor of singing at her high school graduation, Letra was approached by State Sen. Ray Powers who just happened to be in the audience for his grandson’s graduation. He asked her to sing at a series of events, which eventually led to singing for former President George Bush at the Broadmoor Hotel International Center August 6, 1992.
After falling in love and marriage Letra served at Pillar of Truth Tabernacle where her mother pastured. She was asked to join a gospel group based outside of Colorado Springs called Anointed, Inc. (not to be confused with Anointed on Brainstorm Records label) which was one of the most sought- after groups in the region at that time. After a successful run, the group disbanded and Letra faithfully continued singing as a praise team member with her new church home, Preeminence Christian Fellowship. She and her husband also served as youth directors.
Power in the Word
After some time, Letra and her husband moved to Ocala, FL, where they found a great church home at Spirit Life Church. Letra ministered with the children’s department and praise team, and sang soprano and assisted with vocal arrangements on the church’s third CD project entitled “The Breaker is Rising”.
During this time, Letra was also a part of the Ocala Civic Theatre with the leading role as The Narrator in “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”. This was the most attended show at the theatre during the 2003 season with over 6,000 in weekly attendance for a total of a 24 show run. She won Outstanding Performance in a Leading Role for a Main Stage Musical. She also played Sophie in the Hooverville scene in “Annie”, and served as drama director for the radio station outreach program “World Wide Kids” for EBM International with Mark and Janene Dubbeld. This included writing short skits and teaching the children how to come out of their shell, so that when children in Africa heard the podcast, it would seem like the characters were actually there with them.
A New Beginning
After living in Florida for five years, she returned to Colorado Springs where she served at Calvary Worship Center with Pastor Al & Mrs. Norma Pittman in the capacities of worship department assistant, choir director, & women’s ministry event coordinator. She also released her debut CD project Sweet & Strong with her CWC church family. She now resides in the beautiful swan city of Lakeland, FL. consulting ministry leaders & worship teams in strategy while worshiping Passionately, Purposefully, & Perpetually. With a global intent, her music ministry and production company Breaking Point Productions is taking her in new directions such as being a columnist for magazines and newsletters and hosting a fresh hot radio show coming in September 2011.
She enjoys performing where there is a need – including churches, concert halls, convention centers and clubs. Besides singing and production work, Letra enjoys raising three children and spending time with her husband of 19 years. She also loves to try new and proven recipes, so when you come to hear her sing, please bring a recipe to share with her!
